A weightlifting belt increases intra-abdominal pressure and stabilizes the spine during heavy lifts. But the belt itself doesn't "support" your back—your core does.
When to use it?
- When lifting 85% or more of your maximum
- For squats and deadlifts
When is it harmful?
- Constant use weakens the stabilizing muscles
- With light weights—the core should be trained independently
Types of belts
- Powerlifting — even width of 10–13 cm, for maximum lifts
- Weightlifting — tapered at the front, for the snatch and clean & jerk
- Nylon/Velcro — for fitness and lighter loads
Genuine leather—provides the best support. Nylon—more flexible and cheaper.
