Protein bars: a healthy snack or just a sugary treat?

Protein bars have taken over store shelves and fitness bloggers’ social media feeds. But are they all really healthy? The answer depends on the ingredients and your goals. Let’s figure out how to avoid falling for marketing tricks.

Ingredients Are Key

A high-quality protein bar contains at least 15–20 grams of protein and no more than 10 grams of sugar. It should be based on a complete protein: whey, casein, or plant-based. Avoid bars where the first ingredients listed are sugar, glucose syrup, or fructose.

Red flags in the ingredients list:

  • More than 15 grams of sugar
  • Hydrogenated fats
  • A long list of artificial additives
  • Less than 10 grams of protein per serving

When protein bars are actually beneficial

Protein bars are a convenient option for specific situations:

  • A quick post-workout snack
  • A meal replacement while on the go
  • Extra protein for building muscle mass
  • A healthy alternative to regular sweets

But they are no substitute for a balanced diet and won’t work miracles for weight loss.

How to Choose the Right Bar

Look for the protein-to-calorie ratio—at least 1 gram of protein per 4–5 calories. A 200-calorie bar should contain at least 40–50 grams of protein.

Different types are suitable for different purposes:

  • For weight loss: low in calories, high in protein, minimal sugar
  • For gaining muscle mass: more calories and carbohydrates are acceptable
  • Post-workout: fast-acting carbs + whey protein

Practical Tips

Read labels carefully—marketing claims like “natural” or “sugar-free” don’t guarantee quality. A 20-hryvnia bar is unlikely to contain high-quality protein. Start with trusted brands and don’t rely on bars as your main source of protein.
