Taurine is a crystalline amino acid in free form. It is a calming inhibitory neurotransmitter that plays an important role in stabilizing heart rate and electrical activity of nerves. Taurine is also necessary for the normal functioning of the "sodium/potassium ATPase pump," which regulates the ionic balance between cells and the extracellular fluid surrounding them. This critically important "pump" actually uses 7% to 40% of the ATP energy produced by our body.
