Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, plays a key role in the activation and conversion of other B vitamins. For example, it is necessary for the activation of vitamin B6, the conversion of tryptophan to niacin, and the conversion of folate into its various active forms. Riboflavin also plays a crucial role in fat and glucose metabolism, red blood cell synthesis, and the production and regulation of certain hormones.
Like many other B vitamins, riboflavin must be converted into its active form — riboflavin 5'-phosphate* (R5P) — so that it can be utilized by the body. Since riboflavin absorption occurs in the upper gastrointestinal tract, a compromised digestive system can negatively affect the body's ability to convert riboflavin into R5P. Additionally, certain prescription medications may interfere with the proper absorption of riboflavin and the elimination of its stores from the body.
