Copper is an essential trace element for bone health, connective tissue, cardiovascular system, lipid metabolism, neurological health, and skin health. Since copper and zinc are required for each other's absorption, a high amount of zinc (e.g., 50 mg per day over an extended period) without copper can lead to copper deficiency.

While copper may have pro-oxidant effects, it also exhibits antioxidant properties. Copper is a cofactor for the primary antioxidant superoxide dismutase, which is produced in the body as part of the natural antioxidant defense system. Copper deficiency can affect many types of cells, making fats and blood cells more susceptible to oxidation.
