Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is involved in over 50 metabolic reactions, most of which are enzymatic. Its biologically active forms — NAD+, NADH, NADPH, and NADPH — play important roles as catalysts in the process of energy production in cells, protein and fatty acid breakdown, fatty acid synthesis, steroid hormone formation, and red blood cell formation. Niacinamide acts similarly to niacin without the characteristic "flush".
